Thanks for visiting the site, and for stopping by to learn more about our new approach.
We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how we want Zap to evolve in 2020 and beyond. The drop-style approach to selling cables we've been doing has been difficult for everyone, and after a lot of experimentation and trial and error we’ve decided it’s just not a format that works for us.
What we’ve really been enjoying (and frankly wishing we had more time to spend on) is being a resource for folks who want to build their own cables. So moving forward, we’re going to put more of our time into growing the DIY side of Zap in the hopes that we can help more people make quality cables on their own. We’ve been so impressed with the work being done by many in our community, and we are excited to see more.
We will be spending more time sourcing new kinds of cable, connectors, sleeving, tools, and other customized products, as well as making our DIY kits better. We will also be spending time creating several DIY tutorial videos to help make the process as pain-free as possible. We’re really excited to share some of our tips and techniques and engage in a more open dialogue about cable-making. And of course, we will still be offering deskmats, stickers, pins, and other fun things for sale.
As far as fully-assembled cables go, we’ve changed things up pretty dramatically.
We won’t be offering one-off custom cables moving forward. Instead, we will be offering regular batches of readymade cables for sale.
Having readymade batches of cables available for sale is something we’ve wanted to offer for a long time, and we’re excited to try it out. We hope to roll out new batches of cables weekly, and they’ll be available for immediate purchase. The upside is that they will ship right away, like our DIY kits. The downside is that they won’t be fully customizable.
With this new readymade approach, it will allow us some more room to experiment and hopefully develop some fun new products. We’ll also be able to stay on top of trends and offer cables that are timely and interesting based on what’s happening in the community.
We are aware that bringing an end to one-off customs will be a dealbreaker for many of you. We definitely feel that pain, and sincerely apologize if this new approach puts a dent in your custom cable plans. We’d humbly ask that you stick with us and check in periodically, because who knows...you might find something unexpected that you love. We’ll also be open to suggestions and ideas for readymade batches, so if you’ve got a cool idea for a cable, please let us know.
Thank you all in advance for your understanding. This isn’t a decision we came to lightly, nor quickly. But we think it will allow us to put our resources where they can do the most good: helping folks make cables for themselves, and working on developing cool new cables and products of our own design.
Everyone here has been so awesome over the past few years, we’re really honored for all of the support and friendship that we’ve seen and received. We’re looking forward to opening a new chapter in the Zap story in 2020, and hope that you continue to find us a valuable resource and trusted ally.
Peace and love,
Your friends at Zap
