Initiative #1: Respecting Our Mother
We love nature, and consider ourselves amateur conservationists. And as the number of packages we ship daily increases, we think it’s important to re-evaluate the impact of our business on Mother Earth.
In 2021, we are going to be putting an emphasis on making our operation as Earth-friendly as possible.
We’ve already started implementing changes, and you’ll see more things slowly change over the course of the next couple of months.
We’ve already replaced our PVC “smiley” stickers with compostable paper stickers printed with soy-based inks. We’ve replaced the purple plastic bubble wrap we’ve been using with 100% recycled and compostable paper “bubble wrap.” We’re replacing our packing tape with 100% recycled and compostable packing tape. We’ve started replacing our shipping boxes (both the white ones and the full-color printed ones) with 100% recycled and compostable boxes. They’ll feature some fun(gi) new art printed with algae ink!
As the year goes on we will be replacing other our other box sizes with similar Earth-friendly boxes, working on sourcing recycled/recyclable plastic bag alternatives, and working with vendors to see what we can do to manufacture the products we sell in a more Earth-friendly way, or how we can offset the environmental production costs in other ways. We already pay for carbon offsets on all UPS packages we send, and are working on implementing something similar for all packages we send moving forward.
In addition to sourcing new packaging materials, we will be reevaluating our in-house best practices and putting more emphasis on abiding by “reduce, reuse, recycle” principles. This means, among other things, combining as many items as we can into individual packages to reduce how much packaging material we use, and reusing shipping boxes that we receive at the shop.
Longer term, we’re making plans for a cable recycling program where we will buy old or broken cables back from customers and find ways to fix, repair, or reuse them. We’re also exploring changes we can make to our daily operations—specifically the website and our workshop—to reduce our environmental impact.
Thanks in advance for supporting us as we work through this new initiative, and if you have other ideas on how we might reduce our impact, we’d love to hear them.
